I think Mobile OEM's, and mobile carriers will find the challenge of differentiating themselves on top of Android to be incredibly hard.
Google is not worried about generating any direct revenue from Android. They give it away, because the whole point is to get on as many phones as possible as quickly as possible (which shouldn't be difficult, seeing as how Windows Mobile is a piece of crap). The revenue will come from the advertising they can "push" to mobile phones using their OS. Same thing with Google Chrome - once they have enough of their "browsers" in place to facilitate widespread use of their "cloud" apps, everyone will default to their search engine and they can feed you as much advertising as they want. You have to hand it to Google, they stick to their business model, unlike Microsoft, which has allowed itself to become distracted from what made it the behemoth that it is. They've become so obsessed with beating Google in search (and also proving that they can win with the same model in mobile as in desktop) that they've let OS slip, and so, consequently, we end up with Vista.

Jon Kepler: <em>"Google isn’t creating any revenue from Android?"</em>

Their app store is for free downloads and Android is given away free. So Google is not realizing any direct revenue. One assumes their interest goes beyond direct revenue generation, and into advertising and service capture. I'll try to get into this in the next article.

You did miss one quick aspect writing this article..

Ballmer did an interview with CIO last week where is mentionned that the Zune software would be getting integrated in Windows Mobile device. (assumptions are that it will be part of Windows 7 and MS would also be making it available for 6.1.)

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081003-ballmer-zune-software-coming-to-windows-mobile.html

Figured it might be usefull information for completeness of the article.
